Writing Lab: 2 hours a week that can change your grades

It’s impossible to hide this information any longer… A secret weapon for your academic success is located in the computer room and can be found only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

A common and widespread misconception about the Writing Lab is that it solely exists to enhance your academic essays. Although it is obviously an integral part, Dr. Alex Feldman, the writing lab guru and supervisor, dispelled that myth by stating that it helps “in writing, critical thinking, with projects and presentations for whatever class, whether it is English, Spanish, Business or International Studies.”

Apart from one-on-one assistance from a professor, the Writing Lab offers peer tutoring with fellow students to discuss your writings, to have them reviewed before submitting, or simply take a break and talk about different conspiracy theories, for instance. The head of the Languages and Literature department for two years, professor Feldman, explained that there is a “pretty apparent difference” in terms of skill development between the “regulars and avoiders” of this workshop.

“The Writing Lab played a crucial role in my academic journey”, shared Asher Osemedua, a sophomore student at CIS University, who has been a common guest and tutee in the Writing Lab since last year. When he had just enrolled at CIS University, for instance, he did not know the proper use of the APA format. The individualistic approach practiced there aided him and provided guidance, improving his writing skills significantly. “Tutors and resources at the lab are invaluable in breaking down complex writing concepts and making them accessible,” Osemedua pointed out.

The main role of the Writing Lab is to upgrade yourself, “to boost grades, which is its own form of extra credit, but more importantly, it’s a place to boost your critical thinking skills outside of the classroom,” according to Feldman. Another tutee, Fabrizio Saxer, underlined that it is a good way to connect with people, since it’s not all about writing. “We tend to discuss multiple interesting things,” he added. The Writing Lab is a place for not just editing and proofreading, but also for argument construction, research methods, and rhetorical technique honing.

Not only tutees benefit from the helping tools provided in the Writing Lab. Sofia Sharova, a sophomore student and a tutor there, commented: “By assisting other people we learn ourselves, it aids not only tutees but tutors, as well.” So, visiting the Writing Lab is always a win-win situation for everyone.

Remember, the Writing Lab is available two afternoons per week. Even though it is optional, it is highly recommended for everyone who is interested. Dr. Feldman said that he has seen multiple “success stories” thanks to the Writing Lab. So, it is definitely worth a shot.
